Maybe my story can help other readers know how important it is to reach out when someone has suffered a loss.

While her in-laws did tell her husband to send their condolences during a Zoom chat, Annie Lane thinks personal communication is better during difficult times after a death in the family.

We have missed very few of our grandchildren’s events, and when we pass by areas where events occurred when they were younger, we feel blessed to have participated as fans of what they enjoyed. So we are still on the road, and they love seeing us there. My dad passed away 20 years ago. My mom passed away from pancreatic cancer six months ago. My husband’s parents didn’t say anything to me when she first passed and still haven’t. No personal messages to me or anything. One of his sisters texted me, which I really appreciated, but his other siblings said nothing.

I still feel hurt by this but know I need to let it go. -- Very HurtI am so sorry for your loss. You are correct that people feel awkward around the topic of death, but that is no excuse not to reach out to you. Thank you for your letter, and I am printing it in the hopes that other family members reach out to those who have lost people close to them to help comfort them. Don’t hesitate to show this letter to your husband.
