Parvovirus, a potentially lethal canine virus, is rising in New York City.

reports 25 cases of parvovirus, also known as parvo, have been recorded this year in New York City.Parvovirus is a “highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk,” according to theThe virus impacts canines’ gastrointestinal tracts and “is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated feces , environments, or people.

Symptoms of parvovirus include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever or low body temperature, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. “No specific drug is available that will kill the virus in infected dogs, and treatment is intended to support the dog’s body systems,” according to the AVMA. The virus — if untreated — can be deadly, especially for puppies. However, dogs have a 90% survival rate with treatment, according to the AVMA.“Puppies should receive a dose of canine parvovirus vaccine between 14 and 16 weeks of age, regardless of how many doses they received earlier, to develop adequate protection,” the AVMA says.

“To protect their adult dogs, pet owners should be sure that their dog’s parvovirus vaccination is up-to-date,” the AVMA added.
