Mayor Muriel Bowser signed off on the sweeping Secure D.C. legislation as the District aims to curb crime.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the Secure D.C. legislation late Monday afternoon in front of a room of supporters.
The legislation has around 100 provisions aimed at curbing crime, including expanding the definition of carjacking, expanding penalties for gun crimes and implementing drug-free zones.Mayor Bowser said the D.C. Council separated a portion of those provisions, including the"MPD has for the last several weeks been analyzing data," Bowser said about drug-free zones.
The letter states if the bill were to become law, “the District would be unable to respond to changing and emerging crime trends to address constituents’ concerns, including enhancing specific criminal penalties.”
