Davenport, Iowa endures major flooding as the Mississippi River reaches record levels near the city
By Ian Livingston Ian Livingston Email Bio Follow May 3 at 10:44 AM Large parts of downtown Davenport, Iowa, were submerged this week as a record crest on the Mississippi River led to a flood barrier failure.
While still unofficial, the record water level tops a 22.63 foot reading during the Great Flood of 1993, with the mark set on July 9 that year. The reading is almost eight feet above flood stage. A baseball glove sits on the roof of one vehicle, and the trunk of another is open as they sit in Mississippi River flood waters behind the Peterson Paper Co. Apartments in downtown Davenport, Iowa, on Thursday, May 2, 2019. River levels are near peak for this latest flooding episode. But, in many spots, moderate to a major flooding will persist for at least a week even as waters slowly recede. New rain could stop this recession or even cause water levels to rise again.
