The Dauphin County Prison has been at the center of controversy for years. Recently though, for the first time in decades, inmates were able to go outside.Dauphin County Commissioner Justin Douglas ran for office with prison reform as a huge part of his campaign.Douglas said they were able to get almost all inmates outside on Labor Day because they had full staffing for the holiday. He said this was the first time in 20 years that DCP has been able to get almost all inmates outside.

He said he would have liked to get inmates outside sooner, but he said they had to update the facility and retrain staff. According to Douglas, the prison is currently down 48 correction officers. He said that it’s an improvement from being down about 60 correction officers when he first became commissioner.

Douglas said they have a hiring campaign going on right now that is bringing in some good traffic and interest in working at DCP.
