But Fraser is not obese in real life. Is it true Aronofsky looked into casting an actor who was actually obese?
But according to Aronofsky, it took a “master actor” like Brendan Fraser to play this role. “If you look up the word ‘acting’, it means to play a fictional role,” he explains, somewhat unnecessarily. “And it’s really about, I think, the end result,” he continues. “Are you honouring the character to take people on a trip of empathy? And people that meet Charlie by watching this film, I truly believe will never look at a person living and struggling with obesity in the same way again. And that’s what the OAC has said to us, and why they’re thankful that we made the movie.”
“You can’t give me an example of a character that is a truly well-rounded, complicated, intelligent, sensitive, beautiful person, living with obesity on film. It does not exist. They’re always bad guys or jokes.” Wearing that fat suit took a physical toll on Fraser. Underneath, he wore the same thing Formula One drivers wear to keep their bodies cool in burning engines – cold water tubes flowing through his body.
