True freshman Danny O’Neil is one of two quarterbacks listed atop the Aztecs’ depth chart. Danny O’Neil grew up in Indiana, where Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning’s legendary career with the Indianapolis Colts still resonates.
, naming O’Neil to open the 2024 season Aug. 31 against Texas A&M-Commerce. The true freshman from Indiana’s Cathedral High School beat out sophomore transfer AJ Duffy and redshirt freshman Javance Tupou’ata-Johnson for the job. O’Neil’s selection is historic. Through SDSU’s 55 years of Division I football, the Aztecs have never opened the season with a true freshman starting quarterback. “This isn’t about the future. It’s about our team this year, and everyone that’s a part of this organization, to be in the best position to be successful for the here and the now so that we can win right now.”
The Aztecs had two public scrimmages, one in the spring and one during training camp, so fans didn’t see much of the quarterback competition. They did see O’Neil throw three interceptions, which caused concern among some observers.“Out here, everyone is the best of the best,” O’Neil said, “so the windows are tighter. You have to be on time . In high school, you could be late and maybe sneak a ball in there.
