The meet-up marked Johnson’s first high-profile meeting with a GOP figure after announcing Sept. 22 that he was switching party affiliations to Republican. Scott, the country’s only Black Republican U.S. Senator, after the meeting said he and Johnson had been talking off and on for “a number of years” and that he was in Dallas “because I had an opportunity to have lunch with the mayor.”“We’re so thankful that he did what he’s done and he’s joined the Republican Party because he felt like he was no longer welcome where he was because he thought there was a better path forward,” Scott said of the mayor.

During their walk, Scott told Johnson he was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the mayor noted how Klyde Warren Park is built over a highway and how Dallas has about a dozen Fortune 500 companies based in the city. Johnson pointed out different sights around the park as they were passing them, like the children’s playground and the food trucks.“I mean, I eat them all,” Johnson responded. “I didn’t get this big being that picky. I eat them all.
