Above, is a file image from the Dallas Black Dance Theater. Dancers were fired recently after a social media post. Some may argue that the dancers’ video was merely a form of artistic expression or harmless fun, writes Zenetta S. Drew. With over 37 years of experience in the arts and dance industry and having served on the board of directors for over 40 arts and dance organizations, I can confidently state that no reputable organization would condone such behavior.
Some may argue that the dancers’ video was merely a form of artistic expression or harmless fun. With over 37 years of experience in the arts and dance industry and having served on the Board of Directors for over 40 arts and dance organizations, I can confidently state that no reputable organization would condone such behavior. To those who suggest the dancers’ actions should be excused as “kids who are just playing,” I, as a Black professional, reject such harmful stereotypes.
In addition, during the week of June 24, 2024, we issued the dancers letters of intent to enter into an agreement for the upcoming season. Three days prior to that, on June 21, the dancers made the video. We didn’t learn of the video until July 25, nearly a month after it was posted. Once we understood its impact on our organization, we took immediate and necessary action.
It is disappointing that the union has chosen to respond with pressure tactics, advising its members not to audition with DBDT. Such actions only limit members’ career opportunities. However, we will not be pressured into reinstating dancers whose actions have caused significant harm to our company and without allowing the National Labor Relations Board to first consider the dispute.
The arts are a powerful platform for expression, but with that power comes responsibility. At DBDT, we believe in setting the highest standards for our artists, both on and off the stage, while they are representing DBDT.We respect the dancers’ choice to join the union, but we will continue to enforce our policies and uphold the integrity that our audiences, donors and community have come to expect.
