D-Backs storm back, take 6-5 lead over Nationals in Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. — After dropping the final two games of their weekend series with the Atlanta Braves, the Arizona Diamondbacks got back in the win column Tuesday night in Washington. They used a dominant offensive performance to beat the Nationals, 10-5.
Pavin Smith hit the only Diamondbacks' home run on a 392-foot shot to left-center in the seventh inning. He and Josh Rojas led the way with three RBI — an encouraging sign for two players who have struggled over the past month. Geraldo Perdomo, another player hitting under .200 over the past month, added a single, two walks and a stolen base.
The Nationals got a run back in the bottom half when Lane Thomas crushed a middle-middle fastball from Henry out to left field. Henry bounced back from his poor first to cruise through the next three innings but struggled again in the fifth, eventually being replaced by José Ruiz with one out in the inning. His final line was 4 1/3 innings, five runs, five hits, two strikeouts and three walks.
Gurriel was schedule for a routine off day on Saturday against the Braves to manage fatigue, but was switched into the lineup late when Jake McCarthy and Christian Walker were both unavailable due to a bout with food poisoning. The next morning, Gurriel felt the tightness in his groin, prompting a last-second lineup switch with Walker serving as the designated hitter.
Gurriel has been one of the key pieces in the Diamondbacks’ 35-25 start. He is hitting .310/.359/.550 and has appeared in 53 of the team’s 60 games. In May alone, he hit eight home runs, batted .352 and posted a 1.130 OPS, helping the Diamondbacks’ outfield weather disappointing starts to the season from Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy.
Kelly is on the 60-day injured list, meaning that the Diamondbacks will need to clear a 40-man roster spot upon his return. It remains unclear what the split at catcher will be between Kelly and Gabriel Moreno when Kelly is activated.WASHINGTON — Relievers Joe Mantiply and Anthony Misiewicz both pitched in extended spring training Tuesday. Mantiply is working his way back from a right hamstring strain suffered in early May, while Misiewicz injured his right calf a week later.
