A man was arrested after allegedly striking a cyclist with his car and then stabbing him, officials said.
Vanroy Evan Smith, 39, was booked into the Orange County jail on suspicion of murder, the sheriff's department said.
The department said deputies were called to the scene just after 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 and found the cyclist, who was identified as 58-year-old Michael John Mammone, with severe injuries on the ground at the intersection of PCH and Crown Valley Parkway. Medics took Mammone to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff's office said.
In the preliminary investigation, the sheriff found that Mammone was pedaling northbound on the PCH when Smith hit him from behind, the release said. Smith got out of his car and allegedly stabbed Mammone. Bystanders stopped Smith and turned him over to police, who detained him. Police recovered a knife at the scene as evidence.The sheriff's department said that the early investigation hasn't found any evidence that Mammone and Smith knew one another.
“We currently don’t truly understand the why … as far as motivation and any type of relationship,” Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Woodruff told the TV station. “Investigators are keeping all options open to check those boxes if you will, to make sure they don’t leave anything uncovered.”
