Eighty years ago, Los Angeles police and military beat up young men for their “zoot suits.” Now the youths are honored.
The 80th anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots was commemorated on Saturday, June 3, with a caravan of vintage cars that started in Boyle Heights and snaked across the newinto the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles. The riders and onlookers ranged from the elderly to the young, including lucky Easton Barrera, a boy who waited in the back seat of a 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe for his car’s turn to cross the popular bridge.
