Video shows a figure dressed in green climbing the statue and attempting to pry the body off the cross by swinging from the hanging torso.
The head of the Cathedral High School Art Department, Stephen Belyea, pointed to a desire by some to destroy what they see as a powerful symbol.
That symbol, whether you’re a Roman Catholic or not, has a lot of power and for most people it intends to touch your heart in a special way about great sacrifices,” Belyea told Boston 25 News. “When you see someone who wants to destroy that symbol, it asks you ‘why?’”“Keep in mind that’s not everybody. One person did this and I know that at the Cathedral itself, people will be wanting that crucifix repaired as soon as possible," he said.
The Archdiocese and Cathedral are now reportedly looking to replace the statue. The Cathedral of the Holy Cross did not immediately respond to a request or comment from The National Desk Wednesday.
