The Myanmar sanctions deserve praise
: “U.S. officials are also avoiding the issue of Burmese military accountability for the massive Rohingya abuses, a grotesque pattern of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. Activists and others in Myanmar are desperate for stronger U.S. leadership.”
The new sanctions finally signal stronger U.S. leadership and a ramping up of pressure on the military. The U.S. action responds in part to the military’s recent decision to prematurely release soldiers who had been convicted of participating in a massacre of Rohingyas.an “egregious example of the continued and severe lack of accountability for the military and its senior leadership.”
In more normal times, human rights groups and bipartisan voices in Congress would have rallied around Pompeo and praised his action. But in today’s highly polarized political environment, there was little public comment at all. Those who did comment dismissed the sanctions as too little, too late. The critics are right in saying that much more remains to be done, including eventual international criminal prosecutions to hold those who perpetuated this genocide accountable for their actions.
Currently, there is a pressing need to protect the tens of thousands of Rohingya who remain in Rakhine state in a highly insecure environment. The UN Refugee Agency and governments like the United States also need to intensify efforts to provide a more durable solution for those who have fled persecution and gone to Bangladesh. In the short term, the refugees need to be relocated to safer places; eventually, they should have the opportunity to return home in safety.
