The NHL has reversed the ban on players supporting social causes, and the Coyotes are hosting Pride Night.
Dermott used the tape at the Coyotes' home opener on Saturday and soon after, the NHL rescinded its ban on players using stick tape to support social causes.TEMPE, Ariz. — Travis Dermott had a lot on his mind as he carefully wrapped the shaft of his hockey stick with The Arizona Coyotes defenseman was about to become the first player to defy that edict on supporting social causes — including Pride tape for the LGBTQ community. And he was going to do it in a game.
“That’s when those little things would be picked up in the most meaningful way, the most powerful way,” he said. “My parents really made it an important lesson that you want to be the best influence you can for the next generation.” Players across the league publicly expressed their disappointment of the league's guidance.
“This got laid out in front of me,” he said. “And with the amount that I care about community and the amount of ties that I had before doing this, and now the amount of people that have come out of the woodwork saying that this affected them in a way that I didn’t even think was possible ... it lets you know it was probably the right move.”
The city of Phoenix is home to five major professional sports league teams; The NFL's Arizona Cardinals, NBA's Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks and NHL's Arizona Coyotes.
