The medical community is currently working on a range of treatments for COVID patients aside from vaccination with mixed success.

Microbiology expert Arturo Casadevall, M.D., Ph.D. and M.S, describes current COVID treatments that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration . He said:"Two drugs that have a role in treating severe COVID-19 infection are the anti-viral remdesivir, which recently received full FDA approval for treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and the corticosteroid dexamethasone.

That research concluded:"Patients given remdesivir are more likely to demonstrate recovery and were associated with higher rates of hospital discharge, but not with a significant reduction in the mean time to clinical improvement or mortality."Dexamethasone isn't an antiviral, but a form of steroid called a corticosteroid. It is similar to a natural hormone produced by adrenal glands and is used in patients whose bodies cannot produce enough of the hormone.

On its website, the WHO says:"According to preliminary findings shared with WHO, for patients on ventilators, the treatment was shown to reduce mortality by about one third, and for patients requiring only oxygen, mortality was cut by about one fifth." The Johns Hopkins report points out that monoclonal antibodies— laboratory-engineered proteins that act like antibodies in the human immune system and fight disease —are currently being investigated as potential COVID treatments but results are varied.
