The judge said he is being targeted for raising concerns about how court administrators were scheduling defendants with Latino-sounding names.
Judiciary officials canceled Witcher’s court session Wednesday in Millville and released a statement accusing the judge of ignoring repeated requests from his supervisor to ensure defendants are being scheduled fairly in his courtroom.
On Wednesday, Witcher said he requested the January court sessions be canceled and rescheduled on multiple occasions to correct the scheduling, to no avail. The judge, who has served on the bench for 12 years, also raised questions about the state Judiciary’s investigation. Witcher previously alleged Vicinage 15 Assignment Judge Benjamin Telsey, who oversees all courts in Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester County, threatened him via email with removal from the bench on an unrelated issue shortly after he alleged discrimination in the scheduling in his courtroom.
A court official interviewed by investigators about claims that Latino defendants were discriminated against in Millville municipal court alsowhen it came to scheduling their cases, according to a document recently obtained by NJ Advance Media.
