Ohio lawmakers will consider providing financial assistance for a new Cleveland Browns stadium, possibly through the state budget. However, a top Republican leader opposes direct handouts and prefers a repayment mechanism. The team is negotiating with local officials on the project, which includes a proposed $1 billion mixed-use development.
Could Ohio lawmakers fund Browns stadium plans via state budget ? A top Republican says he opposes ‘handout’The Cleveland Browns released new rendering of their proposal for a stadium and mixed-use development in Brook Park. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio lawmakers will consider whether to provide financial help for a Cleveland Browns stadium this year -- perhaps through the state’s new two-year budget plan -- but one of the state’s most powerful Republicans said he’s opposed to a “handout.
A Browns spokesman previously has said public money would come “primarily from taxes generated by the project.” The city has offered the Browns millions to renovate the existing lakefront stadium, but the Browns have said they prefer to build the new domed stadium in Brook Park. However, Antonio said lawmakers need to first sort out where they stand on requests for state aid for sports stadiums in general. That’s because, she said, offering help to the Browns will likely spur other Ohio-based sports teams to seek similar help –“Right behind the Browns are the Bengals, and right behind the Bengals will be somebody else,” Antonio said.
