Three police sources said the shooting happened at a subway station in Brooklyn.
Four people were shot, including two bystanders and an NYPD officer, after two Brooklyn cops opened fire on a suspect allegedly armed with a knife at a subway station Sunday afternoon, NYPD officials said.
The two officers were assigned to patrol the Sutter Avenue subway stop in Brownsville when they spotted a man skip the station turnstile and enter through an open gate toward the train platform, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey explained at an evening press conference from Brookdale Hospital. The uniformed duo followed the alleged fare-beater up several flights of stairs to the elevated L train platform around 3 p.m., when they gave him commands to turn around. Maddrey said during a verbal altercation, they"became aware of a knife."Body-worn camera footage, which Maddrey said he reviewed before the press conference, shows the man make a verbal threat to the officers. That is when a northbound L train pulled into the station. A door opened and the man jumped inside.
Maddrey said the officers followed and each fired a taser, which both proved ineffective in subduing the man. He then exited the train while it was still at the station and charged one of the officers with a knife, the chief said.Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox.The officers, which Maddrey confirmed were the only ones to shoot, also struck two bystanders and one of the two cops. A female victim was grazed and a male was struck in the head.
