OpEd: 'We need to talk about the crisis and solutions in everyday language, grounding our conversations in what climate change means for everyday people.'

, a global journalism collaboration strengthening coverage of the climate story.

In today's reality, many kids aren’t taught about the climate crisis and what causes climate change. We hear about “parts per million,” polar bears and melting glaciers, but don't understand the ways the climate crisis is dramatically transforming our lives. We have no introduction to climate science, the international climate community, or the reports and conferences that warn us of what our future will look like, including COP26 , scheduled for early November, and the U.N.

Yet the public has little sense of what happens behind the closed doors of COP conferences. The high-level government negotiations that will shape our collective future occur out of view and with little input from ordinary people. Yet oil and gas companies, which bear primary responsibility for fueling the climate emergency, these events, serving as sponsors and sending lobbyists to push their agenda.

If people knew that we have the solutions in hand, they would demand their governments pass policies to match the scale and speed of the climate crisis. They would be outraged that just one senator, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin, is, which would speed up our transition from fossil fuels. They would demand that President Biden arrive at COP having passed a real, robust climate and jobs package.
