The City of Anderson is small but remains in place with steadfast commitment from residents despite a near annual occurrence of wildfire threats.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The City of Anderson is small, but remains in place with steadfast commitment from residents, despite a near-annual occurrence of wildfire threats.

Those who live there said they stick around for the beauty of the area and the people they share it with.people, the City of Anderson has been threatened by wildfire almost annually, according to Uwe Hoffmann, the Anderson Secondary School’s lead teacher. He’s taught at the school for 18 years, and it’s often been the case that the end of the school year was followed by a summer of smoke,But if the threat of fires is so extreme and the resources so low, it begs the question as to why these nearly 200 residents remain.

According to Trinity Price, an Anderson Secondary School student, it’s in part because “The community itself is pretty great.

“Even with the fires and everything, Anderson is beautiful to see in the summer. The sky is beautiful, even with the fires. ”“Fire danger’s everywhere in Alaska, and if you live in Fairbanks, you know the smoke could be so thick that it’s really not comfortable living there,” he said. While he acknowledged an increased risk in Anderson, he also said the residents still feel protected.

“We are always glad that the is nearby because the base will be protected, so we will be protected, and the other thing is, if the firefighters are in here, we know they will protect the town as well,” said Hoffman. This sentiment of protection was shared by Volunteer Mayor Katie Griebe.

“We have the highway to our east side, we have the river that wraps around us on this side and then on the south end, we have Clear Space Force , which is a very large installation with its own fire coverage,” she explained. “I think that it’s the American dream on a silver platter. We’re rural Alaska, we’re off the highway, but we have streets that are maintained and plowed in the winter.

We have street lights for kids that are walking to school, and it has a very nice town and small town life,” she said.

“The community factor is really tight, which I really appreciate as well. ”those firefighters who protect them, those who stay in Anderson seem to find everything they need and create community through events such as the Strawberry Festival, which occurs during fire season. These aspects of life in Anderson create a culture of continuity that keeps community in the city, despite the dangers.
