The new building will provide the space the firefighters need and will open the door for the city to move forward with plans to expand Fire Station #4 by the middle school.
) - Fire Station #1 in Spanish Fort will soon have a new home. Bids have been advertised for its construction and the city hopes to have the work underway sometime in April. The new firehouse will be only a stones-throw from the existing one but will give the department the one thing they don’t have…space for its growing staff.
“Our call volume, much like every fire department in the county has seen a significant increase, so our guys are a lot busier than they used to be,” said Spanish Ft. Fire Chief, Roger Few. “We’re fortunate that over the years that we’ve had the right equipment, we’ve got the right leadership and things of that nature but really, we’ve just simply outgrown our facilities.”
“We’ll go to bid March the 14th. It will be able to house our firefighters twenty-four-seven…bunk rooms, showers, everything that goes with it as part of a big firehouse, but like I said, hosting the administrative side also,” Spanish Ft. mayor, Mike McMillan said. “We are actually due for our ISO rating and we have a current ISO rating of three. We would like to improve that and we’re looking forward to that but it’s all part of the growing community’s…responsibility that we have to provide service.”
