Cook Children’s Medical Center will hold a press conference later today to announce the successful separation of conjoined twins at the Fort Worth hospital.

The procedure marks the first time a Cook Children’s team successfully separated a pair of conjoined twins, or two babies born physically connected to each other. Dozens of medical experts across multiple specialties, including pediatric surgery, neonatology and plastic surgery, made up the surgery team.

Conjoined twins are extremely rare, occurring in only 1-in-200,000 live births each year, according to a press release from the hospital. Surviving the first year is even rarer – only between five and eight conjoined twins worldwide live beyond the first few days after birth. Separation surgery in the U.S. is performed about five times a year, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health reported. If surgery is attempted, only about 60% of separated conjoined twins survive, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

While this is the first such successful surgery at Cook Children’s, it isn’t the first time conjoined twins have been separated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 2013, two twin boys who were connected from the chest to the belly button were
