As a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, I have had plenty of opportunity to read The Dothan Eagle while visiting my elderly mom in Ozark. I look forward each visit to
catch up on the local news from the area. Reading your paper has impressed me with the need for local journalism. In our fractured and polarized society today, it is refreshing to read a publication that promotes “community.”
I fear that our communities are in part divided by what national news we consume. Our exclusive association with liberal or conservative news outlets divides us into camps or tribes that no longer talk to each other. Local news, on the other hand, helps bring communities together through shared experiences, interests, culture, and values.
As local news readership declines across our country there is danger of losing the middle ground resulting from compromise fostered by local concerns, values, and culture. I have always believed politics is local. It serves as that great melting pot. That may be changing with negative consequences. People are also reading… As for me, I plan to continue to support local journalism and applaud the Dothan Eagle for serving the community for the past 115 years.Tags Catch the latest in Opinion Get opinion pieces, letters and editorials sent directly to your inbox weekly!
