.conangray is over the love games on new track Checkmate
Love's a game, as Conan Gray perfectly puts into words with his new song "Checkmate," out today .
"You think you're funny, right?/ Calling me drunk when it's too late at night/ Telling me truths that you know are all lies," Gray sings. He mentions other dating clichés, like thinking you're exclusive and then watching your partner flirt with others.
Sonically, the dynamic track features percussive flares, an explosive chorus, and surprising little melody twists sprinkled all over. "'Checkmate' is a song that spewed out of me while alone in my bedroom," Gray shared in a press release. "It took me about four minutes, and I just ugly cried out a whole song about this person I liked who was always playing games with my heart. They’d call me super drunk in the middle of the night telling me they loved me, then they’d spend the next week cold and ignoring me. 'Checkmate' was my last draw; my way of saying 'I’m done with these games.
Gray is also gearing up to embark on his next headlining North American tour this fall. The Comfort Crowd tour will kick off on Oct. 29 at The Pageant in St. Louis, M.O. and wrap on Dec. 13 at L.A.'s Fonda Theatre. He'll also be making his festival debut at Lollapalooza and Life is Beautiful festival.
