We speak with musician, songwriter, and producer Morgan Kibby (whiteseamusic) about the joys of coming up with the unique soundscape for the new PrimeVideo series ThePower:
The Power, Amazon Prime Video's electrifying new sci-fi series, feels at once very current and grounded in the roots of its genre. The series is named after a 2016 novel by British author Naomi Alderman, who co-created the adaptation with Sarah Quintrell and Raelle Tucker. A relatively faithful adaptation of the novel, The Power explores a world in which teenage girls suddenly develop the ability to create electricity at will.
That's great. I know Naomi Alderman is involved with the show. Were there a lot of ideas about what the music would be and sound like before you got involved? We were on such a crunch time, because I came in very much at the end of this process. The show had been worked on for quite a bit before I got there. I initially came in, like, "I want to use all these different voices, and I want to work with all these different artists.
So yes, that was definitely a foundational idea, turning whatever the voice was doing into rhythmic pieces and pads, and you name it. There are many different ways of using the voice, and that was definitely a cornerstone of the score, for obvious reasons, too. I'm not going to shy away from saying that this is a story about women first and foremost, and there's frankly, I think, nothing more emotional when it comes down to it than the human voice.
I don't know how much you can talk about this, but is there a favorite moment of yours that you've had the opportunity to score this season? I think I work best in collaboration; I really love having boundaries to bump up against. Composition really allows me to experiment and to go wild, because I get to bounce it off somebody, and it's not just up to me to say, "Oh, well, this is what I wanted to do.
