12-team playoff begins this year
Pairings for the playoff will be announced on Sunday, following the completion of the various conference championship games. This year’s playoff includes four rounds, with first-round games Dec. 20 and Dec. 21, quarterfinals Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, semifinals on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 and the championship game on Monday, Jan. 20 at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The four highest-ranked conference champions — regardless of where they fall in the final Top 25 — will receive first-round byes. The other eight playoff teams will be paired off in first-round games. The College Football Playoff Selection Show airs at 11 a.m. Central Sunday on ESPN. Other bowl pairings will be announced throughout the day.
