Saturday will be World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the mistreatment of elderly and disabled adults.

In 2023, Adult Protective Services received more than 83,000 calls involving elder abuse and financial exploitation in Houston. Elder abuse happens to men and women of all income levels and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Approximately 1 in 10 Americans, 65 and older, have experienced some form of abuse – many at the hands of relatives and caregivers, according to reports.
A news conference will be held at 10 a.m. where community leaders will help share resources for prevention and support and encourage the community to “Don’t Stand By, Stand Up Against Elder Abuse.” In Houston, City Hall will be lit up purple on June 15 in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
