Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch promised USC was fixing its problems on defense, but the Trojans' defensive unit still looks like last year's battered burden.

Freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch finished with 232 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns to help lead USC to a season-opening 56-28 win over San José State. So throughout the night, the Trojans were mostly surrounded by silence, from fans who were so flabbergasted they couldn’t even boo., surely weary of defending his pal Grinch, displayed equal parts resignation and frustration that this is once again an issue.

“The message was, we got a special team,” Williams said. “The second part of the message was … we’ve got a long way to go and a lot to get better at.” Games like this aren’t going to win a second Heisman for Williams, who was 18 for 25 for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Throughout the night he struggled to find open receivers, held the ball too long while looking for the home run throw and took unnecessary hits.“Walking off the field, there’s a bit of frustration,” Williams said.

“There’s a lot to work on,” said linebacker Mason Cobb. “The sky’s the limit, you’ve seen those plays when we were all on our stuff ... just trying to make sure we limit those mistakes.”
