Ted Slowik of DailySouthtown writes: 'Nearly four years into a crisis in which poisonous lead contaminates water in south suburban University Park homes, residents are emerging from the pandemic with a renewed commitment to fight for justice.'

Oliver Ciciora, an environmental justice organizer with Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation, participates via teleconference in a town hall Wednesday with the Rev. Reginald Williams, pastor at First Baptist Church of University Park.

Hundreds of residents drive to a facility every week and pick up large, heavy bottles of water to use in their homes.“It’s terrible we’re still faced with this problem,” resident Gina Williams said. “We’re still talking about the same things.” “You build a groundswell that puts pressure on them,” Rev. Williams said. “At some point this is going to turn. It’s not going to turn unless we start here.”

“One thing that I’ve struggled to find is the contract,” Scott said. “No one has the contract. I’ve met with several people and no one seems to have that contract.” Residents are frustrated authorities have deemed Aqua in compliance because tests showed lead levels did not exceed standardsThat means elevated lead levels are permissible in up to 10% of homes tested and creates fear and uncertainty among residents of homes that have not been tested.

“Aqua is the one who created the problem,” Gina Williams said. “They’re the ones having these tests performed. So how can we trust these tests?”Aqua representatives provided a statement Thursday in response to my inquiries about concerns raised during the town hall.
