Offense has surged under former University of San Diego coaching colleagues. Special teams are succeeding under La Jolla High alum.
Seven years ago, inside a Mission Valley ballroom, a young assistant coach with the University of San Diego named Tanner Engstrand showed well in addressing dozens of football coaches.
Engstrand’s breakdowns of offensive plays held the room’s attention at a clinic that featured head coaches Rocky Long , David Shaw and Sonny Dykes . Now 40, the graduate of USD and San Diego State is succeeding as an NFL assistant with the surprising Detroit Lions. Making it a San Diego trio in Motown, Engstrand works alongside former USD colleague Hank Fraley and former La Jolla High pole vault champion Dave Fipp.Engstrand is passing game coordinator and tight ends coach for an offense that’s fifth in points scored, fifth in net yards per pass attempt and seventh in passing touchdowns.
The Lions’ USD duo had fun Sunday at the expense of Kevin O'Connnell, the former Aztecs QB whose Vikings lead the NFC North. Among the 11 teammates Goff targeted was tackle Penei Sewell, one of Fraley’s blockers. He caught a nine-yard pass. The passing offense put 330 yards and three TDs into the 34-23 victory.
Fipp is a longtime special teams coach who won a Super Bowl with Philadelphia. His Lions units stand ninth in Football Outsiders’ rankings. fueled RB Jordan Mason’s 56-yard rush in Thursday’s victory at Seattle. Brunskill’s 36-snap performance merited a good grade from Pro Football Focus., San Francisco’s defense has allowed under 16 points in the past seven games, all victories.
