A mischievous grin formed on the face of North Carolina football coach Mack Brown as he shared a fleeting thought about how to avoid being buried under an avalanche of points in the Holiday Bowl, a game known for treating scoreboards like piñatas.
This is the game in which BYU’s Ty Detmer threw for 576 yards against Penn State … and lost. Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders ran for 222 yards and five touchdowns … in three quarters. Jim McMahon and BYU trailed SMU by 20 … and won anyway. Oregon’s offense, behind Nix, is No. 4 in the country in total offense while piling up more than 500 yards per game. Drake Maye, his North Carolina counterpart, stands No. 3 in the country with 4,115 passing yards while accounting for 42 touchdowns.
