About 100 protesters were arrested during the NYPD sweep of Columbia University on Tuesday.
by RAY LEWIS | The National DeskNew York City police enter an upper floor of Hamilton Hall on the Columbia University campus using a tactical vehicle, in New York Tuesday, April 30, 2024, after a building was taken over by protesters earlier Tuesday.
The NYPD dismantled an encampment on Tuesday that was set up to demand Columbia, a private university, divest from companies perceived as helping Israel in its war with Hamas. It also cleared an academic building protesters broke into and barricaded themselves in. About 100 protesters were arrested during the NYPD sweep.
Shafik said the demonstrators violated Columbia rules and policies while creating a “harassing” and “intimidating” environment. This erosion of trust did not happen all of a sudden,” the AAUP chapter wrote. “It was the culmination of shocking failures of decision-making and judgement over the past seven months.”
