UCSD meets Big West's top pitching staff at Triton Ballpark; San Diego State hosts Nevada and University of San Diego hosts USF in other Division I series

When UC San Diego was picked to finish eighth in the Big West in a preseason coaches poll, UCSD coach Eric Newman said, “That’s where we finished last year. We’re going to have to go earn it.”

Another earning experience awaits UCSD again this week when preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara comes to Triton Ballpark this weekend. The Gauchos have the Big West’s top-ranked pitching staff sporting a 3.86 ERA. UCSD’s staff is second at 4.26. The Gauchos’ starting rotation is anchored by left-hander Mike Gutierrez , right-handers Matt Ager and Tyler Bremner , a Scripps Ranch High graduate.

UCSD sophomore right-hander Nic Gregson has emerged this season, allowing two or fewer earned runs in seven of his past eight appearances. Junior left-handers Izaak Martinez and Ryan Rissas have been standouts in relief. SDSU’s pitching staff leads the Mountain West in ERA and strikeouts , led by junior left-hander TJ Fondtain . Fondtain also leads SDSU in home runs and is second to teammate Poncho Ruiz in RBIs.The Toreros meet USF needing a strong series to get back in the mix for the four-team conference tournament that will be played next month in Las Vegas. USD is in fifth place, just a half-game out of a three-way tie for second.
