Tuesday is expected to be a degree or two warmer than today for some places in Alabama. Those hot temperatures combined with dry air and light winds could raise ozone concentrations on Tuesday in the Birmingham area to levels that could affect sensitive groups, like those with asthma and children.A Code Orange air quality alert will be in effect on Tuesday for Jefferson and Shelby counties.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management issued the alert because ozone levels on Tuesday are expected to rise high enough to affect those with respiratory conditions. Children can also be at risk.an area of high pressure — which is responsible for Alabama’s high temperatures of late — will remain in control of the weather on Tuesday. Slightly drier air is expected to be in place and winds will be light.

High temperatures in the Birmingham area on Tuesday are expected to rise into the upper 90s. That could cause ground-level ozone concentrations to reach unhealthy levels for those sensitive groups.Some recommendations for air quality alert days from ADEM:* Limit driving and combine errands.* Limit engine idling.
