Armen Sarkisyan, a Ukrainian separatist and founder of a Russian military unit composed of convicted criminals, was killed in a grenade blast at an elite Moscow residential building. Russian authorities are investigating the incident.

Armen Sarkisyan, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and founder of a military battalion dedicated to supporting Putin's war effort, was killed in a grenade blast at an upscale residential building in Moscow on Monday. According to multiple Russian news outlets, Sarkisyan succumbed to his injuries while in intensive care after Russian state media reported his hospitalization following the explosion in northwest Moscow .

Newsweek reached out to both the Kremlin and Ukrainian authorities for comment but did not receive an immediate response. Sarkisyan's significance stems from his role as a Ukrainian separatist engaged in combat against Kyiv. He was entrusted with the formation of the Arbat combat unit, a group tasked with confronting Ukrainian troops on the front lines. This battalion operates in Russia's border region of Kursk and consists of individuals described by the Ukrainian security service as 'repeat offenders convicted of serious crimes.'The initial reports from Russian state media described the incident as an assassination attempt, stating that an explosion occurred on the first floor of a residential complex named 'Scarlet Sails' located on Aviatsionnaya Street in Moscow. Russian news outlets characterized the apartment complex as 'elite.' According to reports, the explosive device detonated as Sarkisyan entered the building accompanied by his security detail. Emergency services initially reported that one person was killed and four others sustained injuries in the blast, as relayed by the state-run news agency Tass. A law enforcement source quoted by Tass stated, 'The purpose of the explosion in the Scarlet Sails residential complex was an attempted murder. Who organized it is being established.' Shortly after, RIA Novosti, another Russian state-run news agency, cited a law enforcement source as reporting that Sarkisyan was hospitalized in critical condition and would undergo leg amputation. Multiple Telegram channels, including 112, claimed that Sarkisyan's left leg was severed in the explosion. 112 later announced that he had died in intensive care without regaining consciousness. His death was also confirmed by Mash, a Telegram news channel with purported ties to Russian law enforcement, as well as Russian newspapers Kommersant and Izvestia
