Synthetic embryos are clones, an idea that rattled the world’s sense of ethics in 1996 when “Dolly” the sheep was successfully copied.
In an experiment that is more out of a sci-fi film than real life, researchers at the University of Florida are trying to impregnate cows with stem cells.
“I would love to see this become cloning 2.0,” Carlos Pinzón-Arteaga says, also involved with the project. “It’s like At the University of Florida, researchers are currently experimenting on eight cows. They tricked their bodies into thinking that they were pregnant with hormones. About three weeks later, these students inserted water bottles into the cows and flushed out their uteruses to study whether or not these synthetic embryos made from stem cells successfully got them pregnant.“I wouldn’t call them embryos yet, because we still can’t say if they are healthy or not,” Jiang says. “Those lineages are there, but they are disorganized.”
“There has never been a birth without an egg,” says Zongliang “Carl” Jiang, head of the project. “Everyone says it is so cool, so important, but show me more data—show me it can go into a pregnancy. So that is our goal.”
