Mayor Justin Bibb announces the city's prosecution of 50 homeowners who are accused of failing to address lead hazard control orders.CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city of Cleveland is prosecuting 50 homeowners for failing to clean up houses where children have been lead-poisoned.
Issuing dozens of charges against each property owner is a major part of the city’s strategy in making those properties lead-safe for the future. Each of the properties in question have been under lead hazard control orders for months, stemming from public health department investigations that concluded a child was poisoned at that address. Some standing orders date back years, Roberts said.
The criminal charges filed by the city reflect failures to clean up homes for each day that passed between late May and early September, officials said. Among other efforts, the city has hired a point person who is working to better-coordinate all the city departments that play a role in prevention efforts. Building and Housing Director Sally Martin O’Toole is pursuing an overhaul of code enforcement that includes measures aimed at addressing lead in homes. The city also plans to staff an eight-person team of assistant prosecutors to focus solely on code enforcement.
