Cleveland City Council is poised to approve legislation that would allow Cleveland police easier and wider access to footage from private surveillance systems to help solve crimes.
Cleveland police are seeking agreements with home security camera companies that would allow officers investigating crimes quicker access to video footage from cameras at homes and businesses. Camera owners would have to give permission before police could access their footage.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland City Council on Monday approved legislation that will allow Cleveland police easier and wider access to footage from private surveillance systems to help solve crimes.
The legislation, which council approved in a 15-0 vote, allows police investigating crimes to gather nearby home and business surveillance videos, provided that the owner has given permission to camera companies to share their footage with police. For camera owners who want to share the footage with police, there are often two options, said Pretel: blanket authorization, which would allow police to access footage anytime they are investigating a nearby crime, or on a case-by-case basis, where the owner would have to provide permission each time the police request it.Pretel said the option expedites police investigations and allows for nearly “instant access” to videos that could aid in solving violent crimes.
