The Cleveland Monsters rallied in the third period but fell to Hershey in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference final series.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Monsters used two late third-period goals to rally in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals of the Calder Cup playoffs on Thursday.The Monsters lost 5-4 in overtime to the Hershey Bears to open the best-of-seven series. Game 2 is Saturday at 7 p.m., also in Hershey. Games 3 and 4 are in Cleveland.
The Monsters trailed 3-2 entering the third and went down 4-2 when the Bears scored midway through the period. They still trailed going into the final two minutes of the third, but then Trey Fix-Wolansky scored with 1:23 to play, and David Jiricek tied the score with 19.1 seconds left to force OT. The Monsters led 2-1 early in the second period after back-to-back goals by Hunter McKown and Alex Whalen.
