Of course Cleveland is No. 1. 🐟 The Lake Erie walleye population has risen to 90 million fish this year, fisheries experts report.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Walleye fishing attention has been focused on Western Lake Erie in recent weeks, from the reef complex off Port Clinton and Camp Perry where a major league spawning season during April has attracted anglers for decades, to the Maumee and Sandusky Rivers, where crowds of anglers are wading and casting for walleye — and schools of white bass very soon.
A perfect example was the Lake Erie Walleye Trail’s Cast & Jig Open in Port Clinton on Saturday, April 15. The winning anglers on Jimmy Bowman’s boat motored all of the way from Port Clinton to Lorain to catch their winning limit of walleye weighing 36.23 pounds, averaging better than 7 pounds per walleye.
Veteran Bay Village fishermen Bud Riser said he’s been working the 17- to 35-foot depths off the Gold Coast, bouncing jigs in the mud and trolling Bandits in green-silver colors. He’s running unweighted diving plugs 80 to 135 feet behind the boat to trigger strikes.
