Civilian oversight board moves to expand authority over sheriff's and probation departments

The proposed reforms must next win approval from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Jails deaths, injuries and excessive-force complaints against deputies have also cost San Diego CountyA community group called San Diegans for Justice, for example, issued a lengthy report in late 2021 urging a series of changes to prevent in-custody deaths.

Among other things, the December 2021 report said the Sheriff’s Department should allow for periodic unannounced jail inspections. The community group also said the review board should make it easier for people to submit complaints to the oversight board by doing away with a rule that requires complaints to be signed under the penalty of perjury, which dissuades some people from filing grievances, the group said.
