ICYMI: City reveals potential sites for downtown arena
On Monday, city council will be asked to approve an assessment from city staff that has determined that either the parking lot located just north of the Midtown Plaza mall or the city yards located in north downtown are the sites that could accommodate a facility with capacity similar to the existing SaskTel Centre. We deliver the local news you need in these turbulent times on weekdays at 3 p.m.
Five sites were originally considered after council decided in 2018 that a replacement for SaskTel Centre should be in the city centre. Dan Willems, the city’s director of technical services, said sites at the Toys R Us parking lot south of Midtown, in River Landing in the area around the Farmer’s Market and near the intersection of Idylwyld Drive and 22nd Street were all rejected because they aren’t big enough to fit the proposed structure.
He also noted that while the city yards site is feasible, it has significant challenges compared to the Midtown lot. Mainly, the area is still heavily used for city operations, all of which would have to be moved. Also, as an active industrial area for decades, remediation work would likely be needed to clean up the site, as was necessary to build the new police headquarters nearby.
The provincial government is likely to be tapped to help fund the new facility; Davies noted it will be an event hub for all of Saskatchewan. He cited a recent Eric Church concert at SaskTel Centre as an example, noting only 27 per cent of attendees were from the city, while the rest of the capacity crowd came from other communities.
