In a new ordinance from the city of Ruston, proposed changes to establishments selling liquor within city limits could soon be a reality.

"The city of Ruston has experienced increased incidents and community reports related to public intoxication, leading to disruptions of the peace, offenses including public urination and fighting, damage to personal property, littering, and driving under the influence," the ordinance stated.

"In order to curb the occurrences of public intoxication, the city wishes to adjust the hours of operation for licensed establishments selling alcohol for on-premises consumption and limit the hours of liquor sales in general, citywide." The ordinance stated the change would alter sales from 8 a.m. to midnight. Within Ruston city limits, there are limited establishments with liquor licenses.

Historic Unicorn Sports Bar, which has been a neighborhood staple for 90 years, is one of the businesses most impacted.city based on the grievances of a few neighbors. If the ordinance passes, employees say it would devastate the business because we would have to "stop serving alcohol before midnight."If approved, the ordinance would become effective five days after publication.
