Police say that six people were shot and one officer was injured in a shooting at MLK Park in downtown Rochester on Sunday, June 23, 2024. Rochester , N.Y. — In response to recent acts of violence at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at Manhattan Square, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced an early closure policy at the park, until further notice.
Per state law, the mayor is empowered to take certain actions during a state of emergency, such as placing curfews or restricting access to certain areas. Chief Smith explained that it is a violation of city code to remain in city parks after closing, and those found to be doing so would be charged appropriately. The park's previous closing time was 11 P.M.
