Banning drag shows in public places might expose popular Fiesta and Pride events to criminal charges.

Tickets start at $15, available at Empire Theatre box office and through Ticketmaster.Senate Bill 12, authored by Sen. Bryan Huges, R-Mineola, would classify drag performances as sexually oriented, banning them from public spaces and prohibiting children from attending drag shows at private businesses. If the bill passes and is signed into law, an offense would be a Class A misdemeanor with up to a $10,000 fine per violation.

The bill doesn't specifically mention drag but defines sexually oriented performances to include “a male performer exhibiting as a female, or a female performer exhibiting as a male, who uses clothing, makeup, or other similar physical markers and who sings, lip syncs, dances, or otherwise performs before an audience” and “appeals to the prurient interest in sex.”

“Drag shows are sexually explicit and expose children to issues of sexuality and identity that should be reserved for adults,” Hughes said.If passed, the law would not go into effect until Sept. 1, so this year's Fiesta and Pride events would not be affected.Josie Norris/San Antonio Express-News“I wish that people would stop considering it a gay event or a drag show because it’s not,” he said.

Originally created as a spoof of the Coronation of the Queen of the Order of the Alamo, Cornyation dates to the early 1950s, when it first ran at the Arneson River Theatre as part of A Night in Old San Antonio.
