Finnian, my grandson, is 4 years old. It is my turn to be a grandfather. A few days ago when I stopped by for a visit, Finn announced with a serious voice, “Grandpa, the pipes are leaking. We have to fix the pipes,” and he led me to the space under the dining room table.We took his plastic hammer and screwdriver and our imaginations, banged on the table’s legs, and, well, we fixed the leaking pipes.
Recently, because my son and daughter-in-law were at work, I stood outside a red door waiting to pick up Finnian at the end of his preschool session. When the door opened, Finnian looked out and gave a hearty, “Grandpa!” and then he ran into my arms and said with glee, “I’d like to show you something wonderful!”
It is exhausting chasing giraffes, riding a submarine and holding onto Finn as meteors bounce off our rocket ship.When I think back to the suffering my grandfather endured, when I think about his moment of peace as he was planting those marigolds, I think how grateful I am that I can be a grandfather fixing the pipes under the dining room table, pushing my grandson back and forth on a submarine, and hearing this little general of innocence saluting the spring flowers.
