Authorities said a man pulled over behind a CHP officer's patrol car, exited his vehicle and walked toward the officer carrying a knife; he was shot several times shortly after 7:45 a.m.
A California Highway Patrol officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man who allegedly charged at the officer on Interstate 805 in Lincoln Park early Monday, authorities said.
Pennings said he didn’t know if the driver was holding the knife but said “it was clearly visible... enough for the officer to consider it a threat.” “While the officer was taking cover behind his patrol vehicle the suspect exited his vehicle, still brandishing the knife and advancing toward the officer, “ Pennings said. “Despite numerous commands, verbal commands, the suspect failed to stop, failed to drop the weapon and continued to charge towards the officer.”The man was taken into custody, and paramedics rendered medical aid before he was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life threatening, Pennings said.
Pennings said the officer tried to direct his shots away from the morning freeway traffic. No one else was reported to be hit by gunfirePennings said he did not have the suspect’s name or age, and did not know many times he was hit.
