Ohio State's offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, believes a commissioner is essential for the future of college football. He proposes Nick Saban, David Shaw, Chris Petersen, and Gene Smith as potential candidates.
Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly believes college football urgently needs a commissioner to guide the sport. With numerous stakeholders like conferences, coaches, players, media rights holders, and more, a commissioner could bring much-needed structure and direction.
Kelly suggests that former Alabama coach and current ESPN personality Nick Saban is a strong candidate for the role, along with former Stanford coach David Shaw, former Washington and Boise State coach Chris Petersen, and former Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith. Kelly himself has no interest in the position but emphasizes that appointing a commissioner is the most significant step the sport can take to address its pressing issues. \He states, 'The first thing I would change is they should have a commissioner of college football. That's the first thing I would change. It would not be me, but there's a lot of really good people out there who care very much about this game.' Shaw has been working with the Denver Broncos front office since stepping down as Stanford's coach in 2022. Petersen, who left Washington in 2019, currently analyzes games for Fox. Smith concluded his long tenure as Ohio State's athletic director in 2024. \These individuals, with their extensive experience in college football, could potentially serve as effective leaders to unite the sport's diverse stakeholders and work towards the betterment of the game. However, the feasibility and effectiveness of such a structure remain to be seen
