China embraces AI with a domestic AI surgery consultant, aiding physicians with real-time advice. Find out what it means for medicine.

This medical AI bot will be able to answer a vast range of medical questions. It will also provide citations on all questions based on more than a million academic records.On Monday, a Hong Kong-based agency introduced an AI model based on Meta Platforms Inc.’s Llama 2.0. This agency is under China’s foremost state-backed scientific institute, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

China is currently testing this healthcare-focused AI assistant model for neurosurgeons at seven different hospitals in Beijing. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics used about 100 graphics processor units to train this new medical AI model. The researchers split these units equally betweenScientists who worked on this model trained it with medical papers, manuals, and journals. Liu Hongbin, the center’s executive director, noted that the researchers aimed to create an AI model surgery consultant. It is to act as a trustworthy consultant whom all sorts of doctors can easily rely on for medical information.
